Tough Stuff

A very REAL fear

I have aichmophobia – the fear of needles. It is very severe and actually interferes with my life at times. I'm talking all needles - IVs, shots, even sewing needles. I don't know what to do! I have tried telling myself that there's nothing to be afraid of, but that doesn't help.

I tried talking to my mom and she just says I'm being dramatic. I have asked her about seeking therapy but she says it isn't necessary. Nobody I talk to understands how I feel and it's really frustrating. How do I get over my fear? Please help!

-Afraid

Hey girlie! This def sounds like an intense fear. I agree that the only way to effectively deal with this issue is with professional therapy. Unfortunately, the longer you wait to deal with a fear like this, the worse it'll probably get. And we don't want that to happen.

First, you have to convince your mom that your fear of needles is valid, and you're not just being dramatic. Talk to you school guidance counselor. Tell her your concerns, and let her know how much this fear of needles has interfered with your life, and possibly even your schoolwork! Once you get your guidance counselor on your side, take your mom in with you. Have your guidance counselor flat-out tell your mom that you NEED professional help.

Your mother should get you to a cognitive/behavioral therapist. This therapist will be able to work with you, and teach you new techniques that will be able to quickly eliminate your phobia or reduce it to a manageable level. If your mom is concerned about the money for therapy, you can find good therapists that are covered on your parent's health plan. You shouldn't have to deal with being scared every time you go to the doctor or having to cover your eyes any time you see someone sewing! You're not being dramatic, girl! You just need help.
