Dear Carol
"Dear Carol, my friends stopped caring about Black Lives Matter!"
Dear Carol,
This summer, some of my friends got involved with Black Lives Matter. We all protested (with masks on, ofc), but now it seems like they don't care anymore. Or maybe they think things got better? Some progress seems to be happening, but we have to keep fighting, right?
-BLM is not a trend
Dear BLM is not a trend,
Right. Some girls are more politically-minded than others—and friends don’t always agree or share the same priorities. But it’s smart to stay informed and to learn to read news stories critically. Soon, you’ll be able to vote, sign petitions and maybe donate money or run for office, but right now you can stay active with real-life conversations and on social media. Can you, without sounding judgmental, gently say, “It felt so empowering to attend those protests. I’d love to talk about more ways we can do anti-racist work together?" I admire you for wanting to keep raising awareness. Maybe you can start a social media campaign with your friend group, or highlight organizations your school can rally around. As Barack Obama said, “I hope that you also feel hopeful, even as you may feel angry, because you have the power to make things better.” Election Day matters. Are your parents and grandparents voting? Share your thoughts with them, too.
