Dear Carol

Dear Carol, is my sister "doing it?"

Dear Carol,
My family and I went to my brother’s play, but my sister stayed home (she’s 14) with friends. When we got home, the friends were all downstairs. One called up to her in a nervous voice, “Your parents are home.” I went into her room, and it was dark and her shirt was up (I think I was the only one who saw), and she and a boy were both out of breath. When my sister and I were alone, I said, “What were you doing?” She said, “Listening to music.” I said, “With your shirt halfway up?” She said, “It was hot.” My question is: do you think she was, you know, doing it?
-Shocked

Dear Shocked,
There is a long road between kissing and “doing it,” so I don’t think you should jump to the conclusion that your sister was having sex. But maybe you can ask her again about this without sounding accusatory. And tell her that you hope she’s being careful. If she were “doing it,” she would be making a big mistake and running too many risks at a very young age. The media makes it seem as if lots of young couples have casual sex, but the majority of young teens are virgins, and sex too soon can result in pregnancy or disease, let alone plain old heartbreak.
