Dear Carol
I want to fit in... without being someone else
Dear Popularity Problems,
Instead of struggling to be popular, strive to have one or two real friends. Which girls besides the popular ones would you like to befriend? Your next-door neighbor? The girl behind you in English class? The new kid in school? Develop your own strengths (academic, athletic and personal), and join an after-school activity to meet new people. Then be yourself. Ask girls questions like, “How was your weekend?” or “What was your old school like?” Then listen to the answers. If a girl says, “My weekend was fun. I went to my dad’s,” don’t just say, “Mine was fun, too.” Ask her where her dad lives and what he’s like and when she’ll visit him again. Don’t be pushy or nosy, just friendly and relaxed. Being nice and interested is always popular no matter who you are.
