LIFE
Dear Carol
Stressed
This is my first year at private school, and it’s hard. When I get bad grades, I think, “Why do my parents pay tuition if I’m so stupid?” I feel I’m letting them down. My dad constantly criticizes. Sometimes, I lose it and cry.
Dear Stressed, School is tough enough as it is, so don’t be so hard on yourself. Switching to a new school is tricky, and getting a bad grade doesn’t mean you’re stupid! Most people are strong in some subjects and struggle in others. Can your school pair you up with a teacher, tutor or other students to help in a particular course? When your dad is critical, calmly let him know you’re doing your best. Start a journal. Scribbling everything out might help you feel better.
