Fact or fiction: You need to change your shampoo every six months

I’ve heard you should change your shampoo every six months or your hair will get used to it and not get clean. Is that true?
“No, people do not have to change their shampoos,” says Dr. Aronberg of Washington University. “Remember, a shampoo is to cleanse the scalp, and hopefully while doing that, not harm the hair with harsh chemicals. In order to avoid harming the hair, companies put conditioners into the shampoos, which can build up on the hair shafts over time and possibly make the hair a bit limp. But, once a person has found a shampoo she likes and that leaves the hair manageable, she should stick with that brand.” If you feel your hair is getting a buildup, wash occasionally with a chelating shampoo, such as Redken Hair Cleansing Cream Shampoo ($15, drugstore.com).
