Eat Right

Good-for-you School Food

When I got to high school, I stopped buying school lunches. I packed everyday to avoid eating that gross, greasy cafeteria food. Instead of scarfing down school pizza and ice cream, switch it up for a healthy home-packed meal.

Lotsa Pasta
One of the down sides to packing your own food is that it's hard to get the variety of caf meals. When you get bored of sandwiches, mix things up a bit. Try packing some of your fave pasta salad.

If you're not sure what to do, try cooking some tortellini stuffed with your fave cheeses, veggies or meats. When they're cooked, run them under cold water until they're room temp and pour a little Italian dressing over them. Add veggies, mix it up and you've got a super easy and tasty tortellini salad.

Kick the Can
Having soda with lunch every day is a bit much. Switch the can of soda for an iced water or unsweetened green tea. It's the perfect drink for those hot summer days, and helps you cool down while hydrating your body. Soda and sugary juices, while yummy, won't really help prevent you from getting dehydrated.

If you really can't stand drinking water everyday, alternate your drinks. Water one day, natural (that means no fake stuff!) fruit juices the next. Or keep the water bottle with you during the day and have a carton of milk at lunch. We girls need to drink plenty of milk to get plenty of that much needed calcium and vitamin D.

And don't forget to buy yourself an eco-friendly water bottle so you aren't hurting the planet.

Fruity Fresh
By noon we all crave some sugar. Pack yourself a bag of grapes (or any other fruit you love) for a healthy sweet-tooth fix. Throw them in a lunch bag with an ice pack to keep them cold and fresh. Or make a fruit salad and put it in a Tupperware. It may not be as sugary as the school sweets, but it’ll still satisfy your craving and have you feeling energized to take on the rest of the school day.
