I’m the new catcher for my school’s softball team. At one of our games, a couple of girls on the opposing team kept holding up their hands when at bat, palms toward me. I just figured they wanted a high-five. Each time, the girls would look at me confused, but I kept doing it—until one of my teammates finally explained they were putting their hands up to let the ump know they needed more time before the pitch.
