7 semi-homemade sweet treats for V-Day

Not a whiz kid in the kitchen (or seriously low time)? You don’t have to slave away to be the best valentine come Cupid’s big day. With some cheap grocery store ingredients and less than 30 minutes, you can totally serve up some wow. Here’s how:

Double trouble

Get this: Double-stuffed Oreos, dipped in chocolate, covered in candy bits. Could it get more insanely delicious than that? All you’ve gotta do is grab a package of Oreos (pick up the special V-Day ones if you’re feeling particularly festive). Melt dark chocolate in a heat-proof bowl in the microwave, stirring until smooth. Time to set up an assembly line (chocolate + crushed up candies on a plate + wax paper) and roll up your sleeves. Dip, coat, roll, then chill until the chocolate is set.

Spell it out

Grab a roll of ready-to-go sugar cookie dough from the refrigerated section, roll it out and cut it into squares. Bake it off, cool completely, then get to work with some store-bought icing. You’ll want it to have a fine tip so you can write fairly legibly. Your mission? Scrabble tiles! Pipe down the letters and point values, pop in the fridge to let ‘em harden, then put your scrambled V-Day-appropriate word in a cute cellophane baggy.

Tic tac toe

Pick up a tray of already-baked, already-frosted cupcakes and a package of Red Hots. Arrange the Red Hots into “X” and “O” shapes on top of the cupcakes, then place in the box like a tic tac toe board.

Put your heart up

Snag a bag of chunky pretzels (rods or twisted), heart-shaped sprinkles and a bag of white chocolate chips (or a bar of white chocolate). Melt the chocolate in a heat-proof bowl, stirring every so often to keep it smooth. Dip on end of the pretzel into the bowl, roll in the sprinkles and set on wax paper to dry.

Fruit snacks

If pineapple and melons are lookin’ good at your local grocery store, pick up your favorites and slice ‘n’ dice. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to make them heart-shaped, then stick ‘em on a skewer for the perfect lunchtime treat.

Heart breaker

Melt two bags of white chocolate chips in a heat-proof bowl, then spread evenly onto a wax paper-lined jelly roll pan (a cookie sheet with sides). Sprinkle on your favorite small V-Day candies, like Red Hots, heart-shaped sprinkles and more. Toss in the refrigerator until firm, then break apart.

Text me!

Grab one of those huge Rice Krispies Treats Bars (or a box of snack-sized ones). Cut it down into smaller rectangles and use colored frosting to write out cute messages, like the ones you’d find on a conversation heart.

What’s your favorite semi-homemade treat idea? Tell us, sweeties!
