Hit the sales and still stay sane
The start of summer means pool parties, oodles of free time and, oh yeah, seriously awesome sales. But before you’re ready to blow all the cash you’ve saved since January, take a minute to check out these savvy shopper tricks that’ll help you keep your cool amid the sales-rack madness.
Budget babe
Advertisers are clever. They know that if you see a marked down price tag, you’re more willing to buy. In the end, though, you could find yourself spending much more money on sale days than on any other day at the mall. What gives? Before you set out, put together a list of all the clothes you need and all the trends you’re dying to try. Then, estimate how much money and time you want to spend in total. Make sure you stick to the plan.
Pick your posse
Each of your girls has a different, unique style – unfortunately, that means all of you have different fave shops. If you’re looking to save time and energy, it’s probably a better idea to hit the mall by yourself or with just one accomplice. Whether that’s your mom, your sis or your bestie is up to you.
Quality over quantity
Nope, your eyes aren’t deceiving you. Those jeans really are 50% off. But before you snatch them up and beeline it to the register, make sure you take a really good look at them. Will the fabric last you a long time? Is the fit perfect? Do you feel absolutely fabulous in them? If the answer is “no” to any of those questions, put down the denim and step away. In some situations, pricier choices really are better choices.
Don’t be too trendy
Although we’ve all gotten a case of buyer’s remorse, it’s easily avoidable. The key is to stock up mainly on fashion classics like cute cardigans, boot-cuts, and comfy sandals. Try calculating the cost-per-wear before you make a purchase. That’s the price of the item you’re buying divided by the number of times you think you’ll wear it. If you’re buying a $50 dress that you’ll only wear twice, that’s $25 per wear, whereas a $100 pair of black pants you’ll wear at least fifty times is only $2 per wear.
Comparison shop
That totally adorable tank you saw at Nordstrom for $30? You might be able to find it online for $15. How’s a girl to know? Luckily for technology, your phone might come with apps like Red Laser and ShopSavvy that you can use to scan the barcode and check an item’s price across the web. If you find it cheaper online, you can show the cashier and she might match that price. If not, make a note to snag that tank once you get back home. Now that’s smart shopping.
