Paint like a pro! Here's how

The worst that can happen? Spilling the entire can of paint. Which home décor pro Myquillyn Smith has done—and lived to tell the tale. Here are her best tips for giving your room a painterly facelift, straight from her new book, The Nesting Place, out now.

Step 1: Hit up YouTube

“There are sixteen million how-to-paint-a-wall YouTube videos available. Watch some.”

Step 2: Buy a gallon of paint

Talk to the guys behind the counter about what kind of finish or sheen is right for your space—they can help you decide. One thing, though: “Don’t ever choose a paint color in the paint store,” Myquillyn says. “Buy the smallest sample amount of the paint you are considering. Then find the largest piece of poster board you can and paint it with your sample color. Tack up the poster board in different parts of the room to see whether you like it.”

Step 3: Go for it!

“Once you get your groove on, it takes thirty dollars and about two and a half hours to paint a room. In the scope of life, that’s not that risky. You can always paint over it in a few weeks or, if you are especially spunky, the next day.”
