What we know so far about Disney's new Descendants: The Rise of Red

Alexa, play "Rotten to the Core."

Disney+ just released the first teaser for Descendants: The Rise of Red...and we *cannot* stop talking about it!

For all the girlies who grew up with the OG Descendants trilogy, the new movie (coming this summer!) is a nostalgic return to the series—featuring an exciting new story with brand new characters.

In this follow-up to the classic flicks, former Villain Kid Uma is now the headmaster of Auradon Prep. She invites Red, the tyrannical Queen of Hearts' rebellious daughter (who just so happens to be played by our February/March '24 cover star Kylie Cantrall), to enroll at the school.

The Queen of Hearts holds a grudge against Auradon—especially Cinderella—and takes the opportunity to use Red for some sweet, sweet revenge. Red has to join forces with Chloe, Cinderella's daughter (played by Malia Baker, our April/May '23 cover star), to travel back in time and undo the past that sent her mother down a villainous path.

Based on the teaser, the new movie pays homage to the earlier films and adds a new Wonderland twist (with a fresh soundtrack!).

The Rise of Red also marks the first Descendants movie since the tragic loss of Cameron Boyce, who played Carlos in the first three films. China Anne McClain (who plays Uma), was nervous to reprise her role after Boyce's death—but the experience was surprisingly healing.

"I was apprehensive to revisit the Descendants world at first, because losing Cam was the first heartbreak I’ve ever experienced," she shares. "But once I saw how excited the new generation of kids were, it reminded me of myself when we created the original films. Everything came together beautifully. There’s one scene that is very special to me, I’m sure the audience will be able to guess which one it is once they see the movie. Stepping back into Uma was very fulfilling, and healing for me.”
