Watch: Just Sam's sweet reaction to winning American Idol

With 18 seasons under its belt and a ton of superstars spawned, American Idol is one of those cultural phenomenons that we all know and love. Over the last two months, the show had to reinvent itself to follow social-distancing recommendations...trading a shared stage and a packed theater for finalists competing from home.

The result? An intimate opportunity for fans to connect with the finalists. In fact, many tweeted to say that Idol felt like a warm hug during uncertain times.

The finale, which aired earlier this evening, kicked off with a montage of "We Are The World," featuring judge Lionel Richie, the season 18 finalists, and some past finalists from previous seasons.

Then, the top 5 were announced at the top of the show, and five quickly became two by the end. The last two standing were Just Sam and Arthur Gunn, but Sam's emotional rendition of "Rise Up" by Andra Day must have hit a special place in fans' hearts. Check it out here:

In the end, Sam, who hails from Harlem in New York City, scored the win, holding an iPad so that she could share the moment with her grandmother.
