Meet the five gymnasts representing Team USA in the 2024 Olympics
In case you haven't been watching the news recently, the June Olympic Trials have been getting a lot of attention. (The Trials are a set of competitions designed to determine the best athletes in each sport, who will then represent the United States at the 2024 Olympics in Paris later this month!) One of the most popular sports at this year's Trials? Women's gymnastics.
Team USA is no stranger to going for the gold, but the Women's Gymnastics team is particularly used to making headlines and breaking records. The latest Olympic Trials saw no shortage of talent and strength from the US team's truly amazing gymnasts, which made the event all the more exciting. The five women with the highest all-around scores were selected for the US Olympic Team (four of which are returning members!), with Leanne Wong and Joscelyn Roberson being named as traveling alternates. Let's meet the gymnasts!
Simone Biles
Now a household name and known as the best gymnast in the world, Simone Biles has been breaking records for years as a professional gymnast (and she even has some gymnastic moves named after her!).
She first competed in the Olympics in 2016 as part of the famous "Fierce Five" team, during which she won four gold medals and one bronze. She returned to the Olympics in 2021, where she won bronze and silver medals. After taking a break to focus on her mental health, Biles returned to competing and earned the most points during the Olympic Trials.
Sunisa Lee
Sunisa Lee first competed in the Tokyo Olympics back in 2021 after placing second in the Trials. During those Olympics, she won gold for the all-around (becoming the first Asian-American woman to do so) and bronze for uneven bars, as well as silver for the US team.
After bringing home the medals, Lee began studying at Auburn University and continued competing professionally. She has since faced health issues with her kidneys but is now back to competing with Team USA after receiving the second-highest all-around score during the recent Trials and qualifying for the 2024 Olympics.
Jordan Chiles
After earning the third-highest all-around score during the Olympic Trials, Jordan Chiles has secured a spot in Paris, which will be her second Olympic competition. She competed in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, helping the US win the silver medal for the overall team score.
Since then, Chiles has joined UCLA's gymnastics team and won many more medals in the World Championships and Pan American Games.
Jade Carey
Like Biles, Lee and Chiles, Jade Carey is a strong athlete returning to the Olympics. Her first Olympic Games were in Tokyo, where she competed as an individual and won gold for her impressive floor routine.
She has since begun competing for Oregan State University, where she has earned the 2024 NCAA Regional Champion title for beam, floor and all-around and medaled multiple times in the national 2024 NCAA Championships. More recently, she has earned the fourth-highest all-around score at the Olympic Trials and the second-highest for vault and floor.
Hezly Rivera
At only 16 years old, Hezly Rivera is the youngest and only newcomer to the Olympics on the Women's Gymnastics team—making her Olympic debut all the more exciting. She only recently began her senior career with the USA Gymnastics team, competing at the 2024 Winter Cup, the Jesolo Trophy (an international competition in Italy) and the US National Championship.
At the recent Olympic Trials, Rivera finished fifth all-around, fourth in the uneven bars event and first in the balance beam, punching her ticket to this year's Olympic Games.
