EXCLUSIVE! Freya Skye is embracing her Midnights era with her new single "Walk Over"
Singing her heart out, starring in music videos and getting into character as a zombie daywalker? Check, check and check. It's all in a day's work for 14-year-old Freya Skye. The artist/actress/longtime Swiftie is making her spooky debut in Disney's Zombies 4, slated to come out in 2025. But, in the meantime, she's been busy celebrating her brand new single "Walk Over".
Between soaking up the summer sunshine and obsessing over The Eras Tour, Freya sat down with us to dish some deets on Zombies 4, share advice for aspiring singers and gush over her musical inspo.
Girls' Life: Did you always know that you wanted to be a musician?
Freya Skye: I've always had a passion for music, whether it was listening to songs on the radio or watching Zombies, Descendants and Hannah Montana. On my ninth birthday, I asked for singing lessons, and that's when I knew I wanted to take it seriously. I was so lucky to sign with Disney, which was a dream come true! I'm so grateful it gave me the platform to continue pursuing my dream.
GL: Congrats, that's such a huge accomplishment! Could you talk to us about your new song "Walk Over"?
Freya: With "Walk Over," I instantly felt so connected to it and felt like it really inspired me. The message is so special to me, and I hope it can resonate with other people listening. I hope it gives people the motivation to keep going when things get tough.
GL: What was it like to shoot the "Walk Over" music video?
Freya: Oh, I can't wait for everyone to see it. It's so fun! We shot it on the streets of London, on a double-decker bus and at a bus stop. I had such an amazing team who put this video together, and I hope everyone loves it as much as I do!
GL: How would you describe your sound as an artist? Who are some of your musical inspirations?
Freya: I love pop music—that's always been my favorite. I love ballads that tug on your heartstrings. I think my biggest musical inspiration is Taylor Swift. I mean, I've loved her forever! I went to The Eras Tour a couple of weeks ago, and it was one of the best nights of my life. I cried the whole time—happy tears! She's a massive inspiration to me.
GL: Which Taylor Swift era do you feel totally matches your vibe ATM?
Freya: I think currently I'm in a bit of a Midnights era. I also love reputation, too. Manifesting reputation (TV) soon...
GL: Do you have a pre-performance ritual you always go back to?
Freya: I think vocal health is such a big thing—it's our instrument, so taking care of it is so important. I've tried manuka honey, but I really dislike the taste. I'm such a picky eater! Attitude is important too. If you go into the studio with a positive attitude and believe in yourself, everything is so much easier.
GL: Do you have any advice for girls like you who grew up enjoying music and dreaming of making it into a career?
Freya: A huge piece of advice I was told is to always stay true to yourself. Always be yourself. I think never losing yourself is so important because every individual is so special. If you love music and singing and you're interested in getting involved with it, be yourself and don't change for anyone.
GL: Outside of singing, you've been working on Zombies 4 lately—so exciting! What was your fave moment of filming? And can you drop any hints about your character, Nova?
Freya: Filming was such an amazing experience. Getting to work alongside Milo [Manheim], Meg [Donnelly], Chandler [Kinney], Kylee [Russell]—they've done this for so many years, and it was so special to learn from them. My character Nova...I like to say she's a ray of sunshine. She's a daywalker, she's tough, she's so kind....and you will find out a lot more about her when you watch Zombies 4!
GL: We'll have to tune in! What's one item that's totally on your 2024 bucket list?
Freya: I've been so lucky this year, I've ticked off a lot of things on my bucket list! One of my big bucket list things was to go to Disneyland, which I finally got to do. I love roller coasters, and I'm a massive thrill-seeker. Space Mountain, Incredicoaster—I loved them all.
💟 A few fast faves with Freya 💟
The movie she's rewatching: "I always go back to the classics. If I'm having my best friend over for a movie night, we'll probably watch Lilo and Stitch for a summer feel-good vibe.
The fashion trend she's rocking: "At the minute, I'm into Birkenstocks and Crocs. Just the comfiest, slip-on shoes I can wear all summer long. And I love the charms you can put on to customize them."
The Swiftie bop she's replaying: "I'm loving 'Paris' and 'You're On Your Own Kid'. Those are just so beautiful and easy to listen to over and over."
