EXCLUSIVE! Piper Connolly is in her feels (and we're right there with her)

Now loading: your ultimate grunge girl playlist, courtesy of punk-rock singer-songwriter Piper Connolly

And aside from being a rising star with some incredible alt-pop tunes, her life is actually high-key relatable. In her new single "muse" (stream it here!), Piper gets personal about the hard-hitting truths of unrequited love.

We chatted with Piper about her unique sound, her fashion inspo and, ofc, her iconic red hair. The takeaway? You're gonna be vibing to this Certified Cool Girl on repeat.

Girls' Life: Tell us more about the vibe of your new single "muse."

Piper Connolly: "muse," as most of my songs are, is based on a real-world situation. I journaled my thoughts and feelings about what was going on and later fused it with a melody—and the song developed further from there. I was going for a darker, heavier rock vibe because it felt more authentic.

GL: When did you first get into music?

Piper: I started singing when I was about 5. The song that started it all was "The Promise" by Chris Cornell. I would hear my parents listening to it. I didn't give it too much thought until one night I had a nightmare and couldn't fall back asleep. I kinda rummaged through their room and stumbled onto the song lyrics on the floor. They intrigued me—I just read the lyrics and came up with my own melody to keep me busy. Then I was determined to learn the actual song, and I did! I've been hooked ever since.

GL: What do you hope people take away from your songs?

Piper: I hope they find themselves in my music and make it their own. I think music should be open to your own interpretation, even if it means it isn't what I was thinking about when I wrote it. It can be a shared experience, even if it's different for everyone.

GL: If you could collab with any artist, who would it be and why?

Piper: It would have to be the Foo Fighters. I look up to everyone in that band, and I have always connected with their music.

GL: What else is on tap for you this summer...and beyond?

Piper: I really just want to create and share music that I love. I hope that I can reach people that relate to my stories and build a community. For the rest of 2024, I'm hoping for lots of opportunities to write and release new music and perform live as often as I can.

✨ A few fast faves with Piper Connolly

We're kinda obsessed with your hair. Is red your fave color?
Funny enough, it's not! I love it, but pink is my favorite color. But rainbow hair might be on the horizon!

In three words, describe your music.
Fun. Authentic. Relatable.

Where does your fashion sense come from? Do you have any style icons?
Luke Spiller from The Struts—his hair and pageantry inspire me so much. And Melanie Martinez inspires more of a kawaii lolita vibe....all the way to Kurt Cobain and his more grungy look.
