Hair Love centers around father Stephen learning to do his daughter, Zuri, hair for the first time since the mother is away from home due to her battle with cancer. Cherry revealed in his Oscar acceptance speech, he was compelled to create the storyline due to a lack of representation in animation and he wanted to normalize black hair in the media.
Natural black hair is oftentimes ostracized and subject to discrimination which was a cruel reality Blue Ivy experienced by the media. As a toddler confidently sporting her natural hair, she was faced with unwarranted backlash from various outlets and a cringey Change.org petition created by Jasmine Toliver titled "Comb Her Hair," which suggested a lack of hair care. Being aware of what Blue faced in the spotlight, makes this feat all the more heartwarming and fitting.
Blue already has an impressive resume, which includes being the youngest NAACP Image Award recipient, three awards for her contributions to Brown Skin Girl from Beyoncé’s The Lion King: The Gift and now she can add a narrator to her list at just 8 years old. What can't Blue do?
