How your fave celebs are raising awareness for BLM

People across America are joining together to fight for racial equality following the murder of George Floyd by Minnesota police officers on May 25th. The violence that black Americans are subjected to merely because of their skin color has been a systemic problem in our country for centuries, and the time is now to advocate for real and lasting change. Protests and other calls to action have intensified over the past several weeks as peoples of all races and backgrounds educate one another and support the Black Lives Matter movement. Many of your fave celebs have used their large followings on different social media platforms to speak out about what is happening in our country, including some familiar faces to GL! Here are the different ways that influential young women in our country are speaking out about the injustices faced by George Floyd and countless others and how they are showing their support for Black Lives Matter:

China McClain
The Disney Channel star took to Instagram this week to speak about the death of Rayshard Brooks, a black man who was killed over the weekend by Atlanta police after being found sleeping in a Wendy's drive-thru. She included videos comparing how Rayshard was treated by police for resisting arrest with how a white man in the same situation was treated, calling for increased restraint among police officers who kill black men unjustly.  (*warning: video contains content that may be disturbing to watch*)

We have spent the last couple of days as a family discussing a very real subject. We have spent time agonizing and crying over how to say and express what we feel and experience. These are our siblings. Daxton, our 12-year-old brother with autism, and Paisley our 9-year-old sister. While we will NEVER understand for ourselves what the black community suffers, we do see it first hand everyday. We have received side eyes at the store or seen our siblings experience discrimination. It has been a real fear of not only ours, but our parents, of the dangers they do and will face as they get older. We have spent countless hours discussing ways we can help take down racism in our nation, but we can’t do it alone. For the sake of our black brother, to make him feel like people will take the time to understand his situation (he “stims” due to his autism which could easily be seen as “shady” or “guilty”) before jumping to conclusions. For our sister, who got in trouble in class for wearing “unnatural” braids in her hair. Please help us make them feel SAFE in their future. Please help us speak out peacefully and fight for what is right. We stand with you. #georgefloyd #icantbreathe

Anna Cathcart
The actress (and former GL cover star!) shared her experiences having difficult conversations with family members about human rights and equality. Her post consisted of several thought-provoking graphics and a heartfelt caption about continuing these conversations.

Skai Jackson
Skai appeared on Entertainment Tonight via a virtual interview where she explained her approach to combatting racism online by calling out people who post offensive messages. Her twitter and Instagram statements over the past several weeks have highlighted her responsibility as an influencer to educate others when they are being overtly or indirectly racist.

Charli D'Amelio
The June/July 2020 GL Cover Star posted this TikTok showing support for the BLM movement and the remembrance of George Floyd. She then took a break from posting as part of a widespread social media campaign where white creators stopped circulating their usual content in order for the voices of others to become more prominent.

i cannot find words to fully explain the sadness and anger that i feel right now, but i know that as a young person who has both a large platform and the ability to enact change for the future, i need to speak up about issues that i find deeply upsetting. having an opinion and not allowing yourself to be silenced is commendable. it’s the responsibility of my generation to ensure that we don’t live in the same world as our parents did. i acknowledge the white privilege that rewards me solely on the basis of the color of my skin. i cannot, and will never be able to fully grasp the experiences of people of colour. i can only work to begin to. i encourage my friends with large platforms to use the influence they have to talk about important issues. remaining silent is both ignorant and apathetic. we need to be better #blacklivesmatter✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿
