Prom season is in full swing, and it seems like everyone around you is already scrolling through glam dress options on Pinterest or complaining about expensive tux rentals. But what if you don't want to wear either?

We're here to remind you that clothing has no specific gender (i.e. there's no reason why someone who identifies as a boy can't rock a maxi skirt or why someone who identifies as a girl can't sport a button-up originally from the men's section). But even still, it can be difficult to break away from gender stereotypes in the style world. Prom fashion is often *super* gendered since there's such an established tradition of gals wearing gowns and guys wearing suits.

Our take: Sticking to these outdated standards just because you feel like there are no other options out there? Not the move. You should wear something that makes you feel comfortable and beautiful on prom night, without having to worry about where you "fit in" to limiting gender norms. No matter your gender identity (whether you're non-binary or genderfluid or just experimenting with new possibilities for your gender presentation), you'll want to find a prom fit that looks good and feels good on Y-O-U. 

We've provided some tips on how to dress gender neutral in everyday life, but it's time to level up and incorporate more androgyny into your formal wear. There are lots of unique and elegant ways to get fancy while also breaking gender fashion barriers—we've got a few ideas.

Matching sets

Matching sets are timeless and have always been a staple of the gender-neutral closet. If you're dressing to the nines, look for quality fabrics—anything from cotton to tweed to velvet. We heart your matchy-matchy sweats and hoodie, but it's time to upgrade for prom night. Blazers and structured pants in every color and pattern imaginable? Say less. 

Vests and waistcoats

Gone Groovy Patterned Vest, $26, Cider

If you're going for a quirky, romantic ~ vibe ~ this prom, vests and waistcoats are your best friends. Make it masc by pairing with a dress shirt or a simple thin chain. Add a femme touch with a lacy bralette or a sparkly pin. Or do both! 

Cape jacket

Feeling bold? Channel all the drama by sliding on a chic cape jacket. This garment offers an unexpected (and kinda gothic) twist on a classic blazer. As far as gender-neutral fits go, it doesn't get better than this sleek statement piece.

Wide-leg trousers

Newsflash: Boxy, oversized pants don't have to be casual and baggy. A wider cut pant serves a more androgynous silhouette, and if you find a pair with crisp lines and a hem that hits juuust right at your ankle, they can be the perf foundation of any formal look. 

Jumpsuits

Endless Confidence Jumpsuit, $78, Lulus

If you want something that isn't a typical prom dress but still brings all the ease of a one-piece, the jumpsuit is calling your name. Jumpsuits are the ultimate no-fuss fit. They've got a practical-yet-polished feel, and you can find ones online that are strapless, high-neck, long-sleeved—you name it. You could even find one with pockets to store your phone and wallet while you hit the dance floor.

Oxfords

Holly Platform Oxford, $160, DSW

Those five-inch heels you borrowed from your mom that give you major blisters? Out. A pair of comfy, chunky unisex oxfords? So very in. Keep it chill with an iconic pair of Docs (or cheaper Docs lookalikes!) so you can party 'til the morning without hurting your feet. 

Ties 

Vaughn Velvet Tie, $38, Free People

Finish off your gender-neutral going-out look with a tie or an ascot for some extra adornment. A skinny tie with a loose, undone knot can add instant edge to any look (think Y2K, Avril Lavigne-inspired attire) while a silk scarf looped around the neck is sweet and playful.
