Descendants 2 exclusive: You'll never guess what inspired Dove's D2 looks!
It’s *finally* premiere week for the biggest movie of the summer: Descendants 2!
We are so ready to catch up with our fave VKs and see what's been going down since we last left Auradon. One of our fave parts is getting to see that fab film fashion, and when GL visited the set of the flick and chatted with costume designer Kara Saun, she dished on the fashion inspo for the film, including getting to see the Disney vault (OMG!) and transforming herself into an IRL Uma! Peep amazing pics of some of our fave on-set styles below, then catch Descendants 2 on Friday, July 21, at 8 p.m. EST on Disney Channel.

The first Disney movies came out in the 1930s, so Kara had decades worth of material to go through when planning the costumes. “There’s a vault for all of the Disney movies,” Kara said. She got to look through the original artwork from the movies to gather ideas. “I really want Descendants to be something that lives forever, so I really took time to just research, research, research!”

Not gonna lie, while we’re so excited to be reunited with our faves like Mal (Dove Cameron) and Evie (Sofia Carson), we’re dying to meet the new pirate crew (China Anne McClain, Thomas Doherty and Dylan Playfair)! When Kara heard about the pirates, she immediately got to brainstorming. “I immediately was just like, 'We need to do pirate punk!'” she said.

One pirate trend that we're loving are Uma's turquoise braids! Kara says: “I wanted her to have the turquoise braids, so I got my hair done with turquoise braids and went to the meeting and (director) Kenny Ortega and everyone was just like, 'Oh my gosh, this is what Uma needs to look like!'"

Dove Cameron has always been one of our major sources of fashion inspo. Kara used some of Dove’s IRL style as an influence for Mal’s costumes. “Her personal style really fits with what I designed for her," Kara said. Dove also had the most costume changes of all the cast members. "She could have maybe six costume changes in a day, because that's how she rolls!"

Some parts of the wardrobe did double duty by transforming into new looks. “Evie has a jacket that can become a skirt, which becomes a short little jacket,” Kara says. Nearly every character in the film has a piece that can transform. Woah!

"It was so fun to see Mal turn into a princess!" Kara said. One of Mal’s costumes is Kara’s fave of the film. “She wears the most elaborate, ridiculously couture gown at the end. I just wanted the air to be sucked out of the room when you see her.”
