Dear Carol

"Dear Carol, Does My Family Love Me?"

Dear Carol,

It feels like my family doesn’t care about me anymore and doesn’t have my back these days. I’m wondering why, but can only come to one conclusion: They don’t love me anymore. Of course, they do love me, but it doesn’t feel like it.

- Family Worry

Dear Family Worry,

I am sure your family loves you, and I’m sorry you’re feeling this way. They may be overwhelmed with problems or distractions, so you may have to gently remind them that family time counts, too. Instead of saying, “It feels like you don’t love me,” say in person or in a note, “I love you guys and I miss you. Can we plan to do something fun together?” Summer is a great time for games, hikes, a day at a pool or amusement park, possibly even a weekend away. You also can say, “Do you have a few minutes? I’ve been wanting to tell you some things.” (Don’t say this as they are racing out the door.) Asking parents about their work and lives is also a good way to start a conversation. Or try this: At dinner, everyone says the best thing that happened that day. It’s a positive way of sharing news and reconnecting. I hope things feel brighter for you soon.
