8 superfoods for girls

Ya don’t have to venture to the edge of the earth to snag powerful eats. True superfoods are easy to find, totally delish and will make you feel fab.

Swiss chard to make your locks pretty. This dark, leafy green is jam-packed with strand-boosting vitamin K, shares Terry Walters, author of the healthy cookbook Clean Start. Try it in soups or on pasta.

Salmon to even out your complexion. Fishin’ for better skin? The omega-3 fats in this fish help reduce inflammation in the bod, which can clear up your complexion. One Alaska roll, please!

Sweet potatoes to squash PMS. These tasty tubers contain manganese, which is proven to make the side effects of PMS more bearable. “Eat all of the colors of the rainbow to ensure you’re getting a diet rich in vitamins and minerals,” Terry says.

Raspberries to ward off snack attacks. These sweet gems are stacked with fiber, which’ll help ya feel fuller. Plus, it keeps digestion on track. Nancy Redd, author of Diet Drama, says a healthy dose of fiber is more important than girls think.

Lentils to keep you energized all day. Need to recharge? Get in some lentils at lunch. They’re key for turning blood sugar into energy, meaning you’ll have enough get up and go to get through afternoon classes and extracurrics. Veggie girls take notice: Lentils are a fab source of plant-based protein. Load up on those legumes!

Avocados to boost your grades. “Good fats are really important for brain development—and avocados are a great source,” says Nancy. They help ensure enough blood gets to your noggin and allow your bod to absorb more nutrients, too.

Plain yogurt to keep colds away. Yogurt is filled with good bacteria, which ups your immunity and makes you less likely to fall victim to the flu. Plus, it’s full of bone-strengthening calcium. Blueberries add sweetness and A+ antioxidants.

Broccoli to protect against skin cancer. Stacked with anti-cancer properties and vitamins, broccoli’s been found to reduce the effects of the sun’s rays (it’s not a substitute for sunscreen, though!). Dip raw broccoli in hummus or mix it in as part of a sizzlin’, veggie-packed stir-fry.
