What you need to know about pad chafing

That burning sensation you get after wearing a pad too long—yep, it’s got a name: pad chafing. It occurs when you have friction or movement between two rough or dry surfaces and can leave skin (especially sensitive skin) feeling sore and sometimes itchy. So what's a girl to do?

First of all, find the problem and fix it.
Pad-induced chafing is more likely to happen when your underwear doesn't fit correctly. If yours are too small, then the pad will be pushed against your vagina, bottom and the sensative space around the very top of your thighs. The constant rubbing of the pad against your skin can make your skin irritated, so the first step is to pick underwear that fit right.

Another trick for reducing this not-so-fun feeling?
Moisturize! Your area is sensitive, so don’t dive in with your fave scented lotion. Instead ask your mom to pick up a bottle of grapeseed oil from GNC or your local grocery store. Grapeseed oil is a natural conditioner that repairs and protects skin from dryness. If you’re prone to pad chafing and are looking for a way to avoid it, apply grapeseed oil on the outside of your vagina and on your bottom before putting on your pad. If you are already feeling chafed, don’t worry. You can still apply it on the irritated area for relief.

Consider this.
A lot of “down there” issues are caused by the pad itself. Make sure that you aren't confusing chafing with a yeast infection and/or urinary tract symptons. If you are using a pad that contains perfumes, there is a chance that your discomfort may be stemming from a yeast infection. And if the chafing hasn’t passed at least a day or two after the final day of your period (or the final day you’ve used a pad), see a doctor to make sure you don’t have a different problem on your hands.
