One of the most difficult things to do during the season of giving is deciding what to actually gift people—especially a *new* bae. At the end of the day, you've gotta answer two questions: how long have you two been together, and what should you get them? It's a difficult and potentially awkward situation, but we've got the guidelines that will help you give the best gift ever. 

How long have you two been dating?

Brand new relationship: At this stage, you’re still getting to know each other. Keep it casual and grab them something sweet and small that still shows you care.

A few months in: You two have built your relationship up into something special, but you haven't been committed for super long. Even still, you've made a ton of amazing memories that would be great to showcase in your gift.

Half a year+: Now, things are getting relatively serious. At this point, you aren’t crushing on anyone else (minus celebs, of course!). Your present doesn't have to be extraordinary or materialistic—giving them something full of thought is the best way to show them you care.

What should you get them?

Brand new relationship: If you’ve only been on a few dates and are still trying to DTR, a card will definitely do the trick. Whether you buy it or make it, writing them a nice message is a great gift to give when things are still new.

A few months in: Now that you’ve been together for a while and have been having some fun, a picture frame makes a perf present. This might sounds lame, but with a cute selfie of you two in or collage of photos in it, it'll definitely do the trick. Alternatively, you can grab them a gift card for their favorite store or restaurant. They'll love that you pay attention to what they like. 

Half a year+: Everyone in school knows that you two are dating, and it’s obvious that you're serious. Don’t be scared to give them something big, but know that you don't have to shell out a ton of money to do so. Tickets to see that band they *love* or a jersey for their fave sports team would be just as well received as a DIY piece of wall art or jar filled with notes that say all the things you love about them.
