5 ways you might be leading him on

Sure, lots of guys send us crazy mixed messages. Did that hug mean he likes you or like likes you? Ugh, so frustrating. But hold on—girls can also mess with guys’ heads, whether we realize it or not. Because no girl wants to break a guy's heart, we asked our real-life guy friends if different sitches toyed with a boy’s emotions. Here’s what they said:

1. You text him back after he texts you

“This isn’t leading him on unless you’re flirty in other ways too. If you just text him back, he shouldn’t assume you like him.” – Tucker G., 15

“Only if you say ‘hey’ with like, three y’s—that’s flirty. Seems dumb, but if you take the extra effort to add a bunch of y’s, it seems like you’re flirting.” – Mike C., 15

2. You text him first

“That kind of depends on the text, but unless it’s flirty, it’s not leading him on. Unless you text him and you flirt with him in person, then it could be misconstrued as liking him.” – Tucker G., 15

“Only if it’s really consistent. If you text him like once every two weeks, he won’t think anything of it. Every day? That’s leading him on.” – Jake B., 15

3. You hold his hand or are touchy-feely

“This is leading him on—being overly touchy can throw guys off. It makes it seem like you like them as more than a friend.” – Tucker G., 15

“This is definitely leading him on. Don’t do that if you don’t like him.” – James S., 16

4. You talk to him in person at school

“No, that’s not leading him on—that’s just nice. Unless it’s combined with a bunch of other flirty behavior, it’s not leading him on.” – Christian S., 16

“Not necessarily leading him on, but if you do it all the time, they might not be sure if you’re just friendly or if you like him as more than a friend.” – Mike C., 15

5. You ask if he us into anyone lately

“Definitely leading him on. Don’t ask this unless you like him, because that’s what it’ll make him think.” – Christian S., 16
