How to stay close with your sibs when college happens

Family is forever, but sometimes certain obstacles get in the way of those bonds. When college rolls around, for example, it can be hard to balance new social and academic ties, while also keeping in touch with family back home. So how can you make sure to talk to your siblings regularly while away at college?

Scheduling and timing is everything. Even though it doesn’t feel special or organic to mark “call little sister” on your calendar, sometimes scheduling those things is the only option. That way, you won’t be playing phone tag all day, leaving messages for each other since you have conflicting schedules.

If phone calls are too stressful, try communicating the old fashioned way! Make your siblings your pen pals. This can be super fun—you can attach handwritten notes, as well as any photos or gifts you want to send to them. Pen pal-ing is a great excuse to get creative, and maybe even pull out the calligraphy pens.

Aside from scheduling calling times and writing letters, get used to planning for holidays. When you come home for Christmas/Hanukkah, Halloween and Thanksgiving, set aside some activities for you and your sibs. Try pumpkin carving together, or taking a field trip to pick out the Christmas tree. Whatever it is, reserve some fun time for you and your siblings to get away from the rest of the fam—it’s hard to bond when your parents and extended family are always there, too.
