LIFE

Dear Carol

"Dear Carol, I'm worried my friend isn't eating enough"

Dear Carol,
My best friend only eats once a day, which worries me a lot. She claims to not be hungry, but deep down, I think she's starving herself. I want to bring it up, but what if she's not starving herself? I'd feel really bad.
–Friend's Eating Habits

Dear Friend's Eating Habits,
You're right that skipping meals is not healthy. The best way to get in shape is to eat less and and exercise more (and for some, therapy can make a real difference, too). For now, unless you truly think she's endangering herself, just be her friend and have fun together. Can you hang out together or plan a party? Can you get together for a movie and take your minds off of your bodies? If, on the other hand, you continue to worry or see her developing more worrisome eating habits, talk to a trusted adult like a parent, guidance counselor,or teacher. A helpline like teenlineonline.org can offer teens much-needed support. Eating disorders are very dangerous, and she'll likely need more help than you can provide on your own.
