This dress is blowing up the internet

There’s a serious dress color debate that is quickly taking over the internet. If you haven’t heard about it, count yourself lucky because this dress will defy all logic and make you question yourself, your jdugment and your perception of reality. If you're ready to get clued in, though, well...prepare yourself.

A couple of days ago, Tumblr user swiked uploaded a photo of a dress and asked her followers to help her identify the colors. “Guys please help me," she wrote. "Is this dress white and gold, or blue and black? Me and my friends can’t agree…”

Other Tumblr users started to weigh in on the color sitch, but it wasn't long before millions  of people all over the web began debating the true colors of the dress. The pic was shared on all sorts of social media, making the rounds on Tumblr, Twitter and Facebook–it's safe to say it went viral.

So what's the big deal here? While some claim they see a black and blue dress, and others swear the dress is white and gold (weird, right?). According to a BuzzFeed poll, 74% of people see white and gold, while the rest believe it is black and blue. Photoshop fiends have examined the photo to match the colors, but the results show the color of the lace falls in between gold and black and the dress material is a light blue.

After Swiked revealed that the dress is really dark blue and black in real life, experts scrambled to explain the difference in people's perceptions, but it's hard to find an answer that everyone agrees on. What it seems to come down to, though, is that people are conditioned to different lightings. If you assume the lighting in the photo is dimmer, you see a white-gold dress with a blue caste. If you imagine more oraange-yellow lighting, you can tell the dress is blue and the black lace is just reflecting the light. It also comes down to basic differences in the way each person perceives colors thanks to the make-up of their eyes.

So while you may see this dress as blue and black, your BFF might see it as white and gold, or vice versa. When it comes to the picture, opinions are totally split.
