5 things we heart about Black-ish's Marcus Scribner
There’s more to Marcus Scribner than meets the eye. Make that eyes. If you can see past his steely gray-blue gaze, you’ll notice just how sweet this 18-year-old star of ABC’s Black-ish is. And, like his character Junior, the nerdy little bro to Yara Shahidi’s Zoey, he’s pretty hilar- ious, too. We chatted with Marcus on what’s up in his world—and how you may just be able to win his heart with a bowl of ramen.
ON HIS NEXT STEPS
“After I take a year off to work on Black-ish, I’ll be starting up at the University of Southern California next fall. I hope that continuing my education will make me a better actor. The more experiences I can gather, the more I can learn, the better my life will be.”
ON HIS DREAM VACATION
“I’ve wanted to go to Japan for a while because I love anime...one of my favorite shows is Naruto Shippuden. And I love ramen. A miso and pork combo is straight up fire. You’ve gotta put the fish cakes up in there, too, if you really want to sell me on it.”
ON PUPPY LOVE
“My dog, a beagle, is a cutie patootie. I wanted to give him a Greek/Roman name, so I call him Zeus. It works with my family theme: My name is Marcus—like Marcus Aurelius—my sister’s name is Athena and my dad’s name is Troy. Technically, Zeus is the king of all of us, which is actually pretty accurate.”
ON HIS FAVORITE TUNES
“I’ve been listening to a lot of Drizzy. I really like ‘Gyalchester.’ I’m also getting into Tyler, the Creator, ‘Okra’ is amazing. The Weeknd is dope, too—he’ll get you in the feels when you least expect it. ‘Starboy’ is great simply because he mentions a lot of cars—and I’m into cars.”
ON THE FUTURE OF BLACK-ISH
“Obviously, there are so many things happening in pop culture and politics, and I’m really glad we’ll be able to tell those stories in upcoming seasons. I think exploring issues like mental illness or alcohol abuse would be interesting. I don’t know what’s going to happen with Junior next, but I’m excited to see what his future holds.”
