Put your hearts up: Opening up about the Sandy Hook shooting

Just a few months ago, the world reeled following the Aurora movie theater shooting. And now, here we are again, shocked and horrified and unbelievably scared that it could happen to us, and, if we’re lucky, grateful that today, it wasn’t us.

This morning, a young man walked into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., after murdering his mother in her home, and proceeded to shoot and kill 26 other people, including 20 children, before killing himself.

What else can I say, girls, other than, “How could anyone do such a thing?” I have no answer for that, because I truly can’t imagine. But I know we need to talk about it—discuss our grief and our anger and our pain. And then, we need to start talking about change. What can we do for the families? For the victims? For the community of Sandy Hook and Newtown? For our own communities as they wonder if they’re next? And what can we do to ensure that something so terrible never, ever happens again?

I don’t have answers, darlings, but I do know that talking will help. Talk to your parents and siblings and friends and teachers. Speak honestly and openly. Don’t judge others for what they say, just listen and respond. Remember, everyone’s opinion is valid and deserves to be expressed, whether you agree with it or not.

If you’re having trouble dealing with your grief, please take a look at this post, and talk to a parent, counselor or trusted adult.

Love to you all,

Brittany @ GL, and the rest of the Girls’ Life staff

Tell me: How are you doing in light of this tragedy? Remember to be kind and respectful to each other, please.

Editor's note: Article updated on Dec. 17 to reflect updated information on the tragedy

ITs so scary to think that we could go to school tomorrow and that could be it. I have family that lives close to Sandy Hook, and one of them is in elementary school. I am so grateful that he wasnt involed. I cant imagine what the families of the victems, and the children who wittnessed the shootings are going through.

How could this happen?? One of those innocent children could have grown up to become the greatest president yet, or the doctor with a painless cure for cancer. However because of this despicable human being the world will never know!! Now their families will have a hard time trusting anyone again. They will be afraid to send their other children to school or anywhere else!!! All I can say is that is this is what humanity has to show for itself than this is a sad day indeed.
