LIFE

Dear Carol

"Dear Carol, are my friends bullies?"

Dear Carol,
Some of my friends are mean to other kids and I'm afraid to tell on them, but I also feel guilty just standing there doing nothing.
—Are My Friends Bullies?

Dear Are My Friends Bullies?,
Next time you witness a so-called friend being cruel, try saying something like, "Oh c'mon, leave her alone," or "I think her sweater is nice," or simply change the subject by talking about a new teacher or TV show or asking a question about anything at all. You can also tell the victim then or later, "Don't let them get to you. They act mean sometimes." He or she will feel better, and so will you. I hope these hard-edged friends mature and changes their ways...and that you have other friends who don't consider cruelty a sport.
