Scholiosis

My BFF was just diagnosed with scoliosis. Can you tell me what it is?

Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine – often in the shaped of a C or sometimes two curves forming an S. “Is it a disease? No. Is it a disorder? Yes. A deformity? Yes. A growth deviation? Yes.

Why do we have it? Possible gentics; research seems to be pointing in that direction,” says Brooke Lyons, 18, author of Scoliosis: Ascending the Curve and national teen spokesperson for the Scoliosis Association.

Because scoliosis typically develops in adolescent years and is more common in girls than boys, all girls should be screened for scoliosis. It’s crucial to catch it early because if the patient is still growing, she can wear a brace to force the spine into better alignment. Just bend down and touch your toes, and your doctor can check your back.

Your friend may have to wear a brace or even undergo surgery down the road, depending on the severity of her condition. In either case, she could use your emotional support.
