Ditch the treadmill: cardio alternatives that are actually fun

The holidays are *finally* around the corner and we can't wait. However, it is also that time of the year where we tend to indulge in a few too many desserts. If you're craving a little movement, but dread running in place to the monotonous drudge of the treadmill belt, why not put some preferred tunes on your iPod and give a new cardio routine a try? Whether you simply want to abandon the boring treadmill or hate running altogether, these cardio alternatives will definitely spice up your fall/winter cardio routine.

Jump rope

Not just for kids, anymore. You probably remember jump rope as a childhood playground game and have one lying in your basement somewhere, so go ahead and whip it out. Not only does this activity get your heart pumping, but it is also is as entertaining as it is challenging. For some inspiration, try a routine like this one.

Find some stairs

We're not talking about StairMaster workouts, although they have their place. Instead, hit up a good old-fashioned set of steps, whether they're the flights in an office building or some bleachers at your nearby school stadium. A staircase workout is an incredibly effective way to provide a challenging cardio workout as well as strengthen lower body muscles. If you want a high-intensity interval training (HIIT) staircase workout, try this one and if you're looking for more of a beginner's stair workout, try this.

Run...in the pool

Don't want to give up your daily runs just yet? Hit your gym's pool and hop in! Aqua jogging or even just doing some laps is a great cardiovascular exercise that takes away all the impact on your joints. Lap swimming and aquatic aerobic classes are calorie-shredding workouts that will get your heart pumping in no time.

Hop on a bike

There's a reason spinning is such a thing RN. Whether it be on a stationary bike or the great outdoors, cycling is a great way to get in an awesome cardio workout and build your strength.

Try circuit training

A combo of burpees, jumping jacks, jump squats and high knees will get your heart going and keep your routine varied and fun. You'll get the benefits of muscle building and toning, along with an intense cardio workout. To start you can pick and choose your own favorite moves, or try these ones.

Get into kickboxing

Kickboxing is an amazing cardio workout that not only gets your heart pumping and your muscles working as you kick and punch your way through the bag, but it can also help you burn calories at a rate of 350 to 450 calories per hour. Plus, you can let out all of that pent up anger and frustration. Here's a kickboxing workout for beginners.
