How to level up your room decor with posters

Turns out, your parents were kinda trendy back in the day.

If you're looking to channel your inner 90s teen fangirl, look no further than the tried-and-true poster. Versatile, unique and oh-so wonderfully tacky, posters are the perf way to give your room a quick refresh. Not to mention: They're wayyy more affordable than your typical room decor go-tos.

We've rounded up all the tips you need to let posters usher in your new room aesthetic. Consider this your crash course in poster decorating. Kat Stratford would be *so* proud.

Brainstorming poster themes

Posters can say a lot about you—your fave artists, your guilty pleasure movies, even your personal mottos! Your posters should be representative of your personality, so we recommend picking 4-5 of your fave things (colors, bands, films, etc.) to look out for when shopping for cute posters. I mean, who doesn't want a T. Swift-themed wall?

Matching your aesthetic

Unless you're looking to totally revamp your room aesthetic, it's a good idea to find posters that work with your room's current vibe. I mean, the Endless Summer poster is a beach-going girlie classic, but it probs won't match with a more modern, minimalistic space.

If your room is warm-toned (think: pink bedsheets, white walls, an extensive collection of candles), you might want to select posters with a sunset-like color scheme. If your room is cooler-toned, then may we suggest some adorable plant posters? Bonus points if they're gorgeous Matisse prints.

Picking your posters

Time to commit to your decor update! We recommend selecting 2-3 poster packs, or at least 6 individual posters, but feel free to add as many that can fit on your wall. Make sure to pay attention to sizing, btw! 4x6 inches is *def* not the same as 8x11 inches.

Organizing your posters

While we heart the grunge aesthetic of Kat Stratford's room in 10 Things I Hate About You, posters don't always have to look super messy on your walls.

Just like an art project, it's important that you plan out your masterpiece of a wall. Measure the area of wall space that you want to add posters to, and try to leave a consistent amount of space between each poster you paste on the wall. However, if you're up for more of a maximalist look, the overlapping method is a super cute way to score that 90s ~organized chaos~ vibe.

To hang your posters, avoid using tacks or any damaging products on your walls. Opt for some clear, wall-safe tape instead!

The best part about decorating with posters? They don't have to be perfect. Posters can be taken down just as quickly as they're pasted on the wall, ebbing and flowing with your interests. So don't stress if your poster lineup isn't perfectly aligned or doesn't totally match that Pinterest room decor inspo. Your room represents you, and that's all that matters.
