You’ve been talking more. They’re always liking your posts. You swear they lingered during that hug but, then again, they act super nice to everyone. So now you’re spiraling: do they like you…or are they just being friendly?
Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. Reading someone’s signals can be trickier than decoding your BFF’s texts when she’s lowkey mad. Here’s how to figure out if your crush is actually crushing back (or just being polite).
They look at you differently
Into you: You catch them sneaking glances at you across the room, then quickly looking away when you notice. Or their eyes linger a little longer than necessary during convos. Eye contact that feels charged = a clue.
Just friendly: They make eye contact with everyone the same way: think more “class prez vibes” than “rom-com heart eyes.”
Their texts go beyond “hey”
Into you: They keep the convo going (even if it’s just memes or random TikToks), ask follow-up questions and remember little things you told them.
Just friendly: You’re getting dry responses or “lol” to every message. They might respond, but they’re not really engaging.
Their energy shifts around you
Into you: Do they suddenly get shy, fidgety or oddly quiet when it’s just the two of you? That could mean nerves aka they care what you think.
Just friendly: They’re always chill and confident around you, like they are with everyone else. No signs of nervous excitement = probably platonic.
They make excuses to spend time with you
Into you: They’re showing up to your club meetings (even though they’re not in the club), sitting next to you in class or suggesting hangouts that feel kinda date-y.
Just friendly: They’re happy to talk when you’re around, but they’re not going out of their way to be near you or make one-on-one plans.
They find ways to compliment you
Into you: A compliment that’s specific and personal (“you always make me laugh,” “your style is so cool”) can mean they’re noticing you in a deeper way.
Just friendly: They hype everyone up the same, like a walking affirmation machine. Sweet? Yes. Romantic? Not necessarily.
So…what now?
If you’re picking up on some of these signs but still feeling unsure, here’s the truth: the only way to know for sure is to talk about it. (We know—scary.) But whether you get a “me too” or a gentle “I think we’re better as friends,” putting yourself out there is brave. And that’s crush-worthy.
