Is “okay” different from “OK? What does “heyyy” with three y’s even mean?
TBH, crush texting lingo probably requires a Duolingo lesson of its own. But lucky for you, we’ve already decoded some of the most common short texts your crush has probably made you scratch your head over. Here all the translations you need to fully understand what your crush is thinking behind the screen and how they might feel about you.
They said: “Ok/Okay/K”
Translation: TBH, almost all of us consider these three spellings to be *very* different. But the truth is, everyone just adopted a fave at some point and stuck with it. No need to overthink this one.
They said: “Hey”
Translation: You might be thinking “that’s it??” Don’t worry, girl, this text is a common flirty-but-safe convo starter for those talking stages.
They said: “Heyyy”
Translation: They’ve been waiting to talk to you all day. That several-hour-long gap since your last convo? They weren’t avoiding you, they were just busy.
They said: “GM/Morning”
Translation: You were the first person they thought of when they woke up. This might be more than a talking stage…
They said: “GN/Night”
Translation: If they send a closing text (think bye, goodnight or see ya), there’s a good chance they highly value your convos. I mean, most friends just say bye by leaving the other on read.
They said: “TTYL”
Translation: DW, this doesn’t always mean they’re *trying* to end the convo. They might just have to take out the trash or walk their dog. But hey, it sounds like they’d like another text sesh soon…
They said: “LOL”
Translation: If it’s written in all-caps, chances are, they actually laughed out loud. Lowercase, on the other hand…it might be a sign they’re trying to lighten up an awk mood.
They said: “[Your name]”
Translation: This could introduce breaking news, a favor or an important question. This isn’t *always* the case, so there’s no need to tiptoe around this text. But still consider the possibility of a more-serious-than-normal convo.
They said: “Oh”
Translation: They’re either surprised, disappointed or maybe even a bit confused.
They said: “Ohh”
Translation: While sometimes a sign of an “aha!” moment, it’s also a common reaction to when you share more info about something. For example, if you said, “I was actually at the beach, not the pool,” they might say, “Ohh.”
They said: “??”
Translation: You’re either staring at the screen with your jaw dropped, or you accidentally left your phone on silent.
They said: “Sure”
Translation: We know, this is a tough one. Is this a reluctant “yes” or a nonchalant “yes!”? TBH, this one’s for you to figure out. Look for context clues, hidden opinions or maybe even messages that reveal their current mood.
Between watching your crush type through the screen and trying to decode their cryptic texts, texting your bae might feel like one of the hardest things ever rn. Talking stages can be stressful for all of us, but those nervous butterflies are what make those late-night convos exciting.
