One look at 14-year-old Hudson Stone—who, with his L.A. roots, beachy aesthetic and surfing skills, basically embodies the phrase “Cali cool”—and you might assume he’s always been *that* chill.
But despite his laid-back vibe, the singer/songwriter and star of the highly anticipated Camp Rock 3 is a self-proclaimed overthinker. And on his debut solo single (listen HERE!), he’s spilling exactly what’s been going on inside his head. Spoiler alert: It’s a lot.
An “alt-pop, indie rock mashup” (Hudson’s words), the track was born from a Strokes-inspired riff and a good old fashioned thought spiral. When we sat down with him to learn about the deeper meaning behind the song (plus congratulate him on joining this fall’s Worlds Collide Concert Tour!), Hudson assured us “Overthinker” is just the first taste of all the musical magic to come.
“For the last couple months, I’ve just been dying to get my songs out into the world,” he reveals. “I’m so happy that that time has finally come.” Call it his “This Is Me” moment.
Girls’ Life Magazine: Congrats on the release of “Overthinker!” Did you write the lyrics or the melody first?
Hudson Stone: The concept is what came to me first. I was going through some very real things in my life that I knew I wanted to explore through a song. The music came so naturally after that, with the help of my amazing producers and songwriting collaborators.
GL: Can you remember the exact moment the idea hit you?
Hudson: I was actually on the couch with the person that the song is about. She had said something like, “Hey, you’re overthinking. It’s okay. Don’t do that.” And when I was lying in bed that night, I was thinking about it and I was like, “Oh, this is a song. This needs to be out into the world.”
GL: And has that particular person heard the song?
Hudson: I don’t think she’s heard it yet. I think she knows I’ve written a song about her, but we’ll have to see how she reacts when she listens.
GL: Any advice for those who also overthink their love life?
Hudson: Number one: It’s totally normal, so don’t judge yourself too harshly for that. But as much as you can fight it, I would. And I’ve tried to do that. Because as soon as you throw all of that overthinking to the wind, it becomes more clear whether you’re meant to be with that person or whether you’re better as friends.
GL: Why’d you choose “Overthinker” as your debut solo track?
Hudson: “Overthinker” isn’t just a song that I can relate to. It describes a feeling that I know plenty of people struggle with. And I love that engagement between artists and fans and being able to sing something that could help people find peace within themselves. I wanted to introduce myself in a way that makes everyone think, “Ah! He’s someone we can relate to.” Because I am.
GL: What’s the most random thing you’ve overthought?
Hudson: Oh, that’s tough. I overthink the most random, everyday things, even what I want for dinner or dessert. Crème brûlée or tiramisu? Sometimes, I overthink so much that I will just decide not to get anything, because my brain is so clouded.
GL: Which of your musical influences do you think comes through most strongly on this track?
Hudson: There are definitely some elements of The Strokes on there, with the drums and the cool guitar tones. I also love Harry Styles, especially his vocals, so we absolutely emulated some of that.
GL: Ever overthink when you’re in the studio?
Hudson: Definitely. I get imposter syndrome and worry about whether I’m good enough. Like, are my lyrics good? Do I really know how to rip on the guitar like people tell me I can? Am I being original? Am I copying my idols or creating something new? You just have to have the most crazy faith in yourself, be so sure of who you are and trust that “This is me.”
