I’m in 9th grade at my high school (let’s call it P). I really liked it at the beginning of the year. I liked my teachers, I had lots of friends, had good grades and it was just really fun. But now, I hate it. I absolutely do not look forward to going to school. The only thing I look forward to is the weekends and the only fun I’ve been having is going to dance rehearsals. And to top it off, almost all my friends are really ticking me off. I’ve tried to talk to them but nothing works. My two BFFs and a bunch of other close friends of mine go to another high school in the district (let’s cal it D) for a special advanced program and they absolutely love it. Last year, I thought about going there for high school, but I decided not to since most of my friends were going to P. Now I really wish I went to D. I could switch schools next year, but how do tell my parents that I want to go to D instead of P? Note: I don’t just want to go to D because of friends. It’s a really good program and looks great on collage applications.’

Hey girl,
Beginning high school can be a tough transition for anyone. At the start of the year, it’s normal to feel excited about everything—new classes, new teachers, and new people! But after a while, the “newness” can start to wear off, making it difficult to enjoy the school the way you once did. Let’s call it the “mid-year blues.”
Start the second half of the school year by finding after-school activities or clubs that you enjoy. This will give you something to look forward to and be excited about. Also, you’ll get to meet new people who like the same hobbies as you.
Meanwhile, you should probably talk to your parents about how you really feel about your school. Let them know you’re trying to make the best of your situation, but that you feel as though you’d be more comfortable and better able to succeed at the other school. Until then, finish out this school year with a bang!
Good luck,
L’Oreal
