Yesterday evening, my dad left and said he was going to a friend’s house, and would be gone for a long time. When my mom got home from work that night, my phone rang. It was my dad, and he asked to talk to mom. I brought her the phone, she yelled at me, and said not to answer the phone. Then she hung up on him. My dad called again, and this time, I didn’t answer. He left a message on the phone that said, “Hey Michelle, I know you can hear the phone, so please answer. I just want to talk to you for a minute.” This morning, my mom left the house immediately. I went upstairs to see if my dad was awake yet, and he wasn’t there. That’s when I began to cry. My parents have never ever had a fight that lasted for more than 3 minutes, and it was always over something stupid, like if my dad didn’t feel like driving to the store. What should I think? What am I supposed to do?’

Hey girl,
It’s definitely hard to deal when your rents argue, but try not to be so upset. I know everything is really confusing and hard right now because they’re not speaking but just give them some time.
Remember girl, whatever issues your parents have it’s between them and they’re not mad at you, so please don’t think you have anything to do with WHY they’re fighting. The best you can do right now is be nice to both of your rents. Try not to be mad at your mom or your dad because aligning yourself with one parent or the other can create more conflict.
If you’re feeling confused about what’s going on, try asking your mom or dad. Tell them that you know that they’re fighting and that you love them both very much so you want to know why. Even if they can’t explain what they’re fighting about, they’ll definitely reassure you that they love you.
All this fighting is stressing you out so try to find an outlet to deal with it. Write in your journal, call your BFF for a heart-to-heart, listen to your fave songs, do yoga, watch your fave movie or bake some cookies. Do whatever it takes to calm you down a little bit.
If your rents are still fighting and you’re still unsure why and if you’re still stressed/upset talk to a guidance counselor or trusted adult about how you feel.
Good luck girl!
