All my clothes come from basically the same store. It’s fine and all except that the clothes are starting to get boring. They all have sort of the same type of…I don’t know…design? I would like clothes from different stores. But all the other stores that have a variety are at the mall and my mom refuses to go to the mall. She thinks I just want brand name clothes and I tell her that’s not true, but she doesn’t believe me. I want those types of clothes because they are not boring like the ones I have now. So back to the beginning, I have no choice but to go to the one store. How can I tell her that I want a different variety? And please don’t tell me something like spruce up your wardrobe with patches, patterns, accessories, make your own clothes, etc. Sorry if it sounds like I’m complaining. I know I should be grateful for what I have and I am.’

Hey there fashionista,
Variety is the spice of life and I totally hear what you’re saying about being bored with your current wardrobe. But there’s no reason to go out and spend $100 on a couple of brand name items when you can buy yourself a whole new wardrobe with the same amount of money. The key here is to select a few essential basics, you know, items that will never go out of style, such as dark jeans, a little black dress, simple tank tops and T-shirts.
Once you have your basics, you can dress them up or dress them down, mix and match, and just basically have fun with it. Ask your mom to go with you to visit different stores, so she can get a sense of what you’re looking for and your style. You could try saying, “I really appreciate the clothes I have, but I’d like to get a couple more pieces to add a little variety to my closet.” If money is an issue, ask your mom if you can do extra chores around the house to get a little more allowance. When she sees how mature and responsible you are about the situation, she may be more willing to allow you to shop around.
And I know you don’t want to hear it, but I personally believe the best way to bring an otherwise average outfit to life is by accessorizing, I do it all the time! Accessories are a girl’s best friend: you can turn any outfit around with the right headband, shoes, belt, hat, or purse! The possibilities are endless, just use your imagination!
Also, vintage is SO in right now. Check out your local thrift store for awesome finds. They always have the funkiest of funky attire and it’s super dooper cheap!
