Ok, so I like this guy in my class. Let’s call him “Mic”. And my guy friend Nathan may have a crush on me. He’s been really clingy and keeps trying to get close to me, but I don’t like him. So the other day Nathan really loudly asked, “Hey Maddy, do you want to go to the mall with me this weekend?” Just then, Mic looked over and kind of looked disappointed. I said “no” but I still think Mic may not like me because he thinks I like Nathan. How can I prove to Mic that Nathan and I aren’t dating? I don’t want to just walk up to him and say it. And how can I tell Nathan that I’m not interested?’

Hey girl,
Ugh, this is a toughie since you’re all in the same class! Try sitting with Mic at lunch or in class and chatting about something that’ll get you both talking-what he thinks of the teacher, the homework, that test coming up–since you’re in the same class you’ve already got a lot to talk about! Talk about your weekend plans and ask him to come with on a trip to the mall, the movies or out for some pizza. And everytime Nathan asks you something, ask Mic to join in on the convo too.
As for Nathan, you can still be nice to him but try to focus your attentions on Mic! Politely say “no” to Nathan’s plans-for example, when he asks you to the mall say something like, “No, thanks I’m totally done with shopping this week.” That should do the trick. Try to be polite instead of outwardly telling him you like Mic. Or when he invites you places, ask him if his friend Mic is going to come along. He should get the hint!
Good luck!
