My BFF is great! But, she kinda controls me. She’s always the center of attention because she’s really nice to everyone. Whenever I get something she always overshadows me, which is strange because noone has ever really been able to push me around like her (I am kind of strong-willed). I just recently got put in charge of our school paper as an editor (she’s reporter), but she decided that she should become senior editor and demote me to junior editor. I finally put my foot down and said “no” and she got upset at me. How do I handle her? She’s my BFF and I don’t want to dump her as a friend!’

Ugh this is a doozy. You want to keep your BFF but at the same time show her that you’re your own boss. Don’t let her outshine you! You’re talented and great too. With the school newspaper situation, you should definitely talk to a teacher or the faculty member who runs the paper. Tell them the scenario, and they should help you out and/or take it from there. Once your friends sees that it’s out of your control, she should lay off you.
In the future if she tries to outdo you, stick to your guns and say “no” and don’t let her do it! Gently explain to her that you think she’s a great person (why else would you be friends with her), but you’d really appreciate her support and encouragement once in a while too. And try focusing on the things that make your friendship worthwhile-your love of HSM, Hannah Montana and shopping-instead of the things that make you competitive! If ya can avoid it, why not.
Good Luck!
