I am SERIOUSLY thinking about becoming vegetarian. I’m going to eat eggs and dairy to be sure that I get all the vitamins and minerals I need, just absolutely NO meat. I read about how terribly animals are killed, and how much unnecessary torture they go through. It made me cry, and I think that it isn’t right to eat them. Anyway, this is my own opinion, and I am not trying to convince anyone else to become a vegetarian, but it sure is a great idea.Do you agree with my choice? Any tips on yummy veggie meals? How should I tell the ‘rents about my decision? Can you please supply me with any info on being a vegetarian?

Hey Flamingo,
If ya want to become a vegetarian and this is something that you feel strongly about, then go for it. I can totally see where you are coming from and I know a lot of vegetarians out there agree with you full heartedly. Whether you choose to become a vegetarian or not, the choice is up to you. It’s really a matter of one’s own opinion and beliefs. Just remember that this is a decision you made for yourself only and that you shouldn’t push or judge others for not thinking the way you do.
There are different degrees of vegetarianism and what you choose to follow is up to you. The most common and general definition of a vegetarian is someone who refrains from eating meat, both on land and in the sea. But I’ve personally met some vegetarians who just eliminate meat from land animals in their diet and still continue to eat seafood. Although you can argue they are not “true” vegetarians, who’s to really say. On the extreme side, there are also hardcore vegans that completely abstain from eating and wearing animal products of any kind, like dairy, eggs, gelatins, honey, etc.
Persuading your ‘rents might be a little difficult, especially because they are the ones in charge of cooking and grocery shopping. If you really want to them understand and respect your decision, study up. Learn as much as you can and regurgitate the info back to your mama and papa. Once they see that you made an informed decision and this isn’t something you just decided on your emotional impulses, they should understand. You also have to remember that if you want to do this, you have to go for it a 100%. If you start to slip and give up too easily, your parents aren’t going to take you seriously. It takes a lot of willpower and strong beliefs to become a vegetarian and if you don’t think that you can commit, then it’s totally fine. Eating meat does not make you a bad person and does not mean that you don’t love and care for living creatures.
Once you’re completely and utterly sure this is what you want to do, check out some yummy veggie meals online. There are loads of websites that cater to vegetarians and offer an endless amount of recipes and substitutes to meat.
Hugs,
Jiae
