I really want to go to this overnight volleyball camp this summer, but its $400. My ‘rents said if I go I have to earn part of the money myself, but I don’t know what kind of jobs to do. Any ideas?

Dear Countrygurl,
Welcome to the world of fiscal responsibility. It’s really cool that you’re serious enough about volleyball to want to pursue it at a camp. If you’re heart is truly set on this (who want to devote a week to awesome people, intense exercise, and goofing off?) then it will be easier to stay motivated in coming up with the necessary dinero to make it happen. What you first need to do is sit down with your ‘rents and discuss exactly how much they would like you to contribute.
Once you have divided the cost up, start thinking about things you’re good at that people would pay you for. I am the oldest of five kids, babysitting is second nature to me. When I was younger I made a lot of money being a mother’s helper. Ask your mom if she knows of anyone who could use an extra hand for a few hours during the weekend. You could also see if either of your parents need help organizing things. If you’re a computer wiz, organize their play lists or teach them how to use their iPod. If you have boxes and boxes of pictures laying around, make it a job to put them away in photo albums. Depending on your age, it is possible to get a work permit and work bagging groceries or other part time jobs, but ask your parents first and make sure you have time for school and homework.
Your best bet is to hire yourself off to do jobs that people don’t want to do. Weeding out gardens, washing cars, and walking dogs aren’t the most glamorous activities, but every bit counts. Make sure that you work to save money as well. Instead of going to the movies, or blowing your cash on a two pound bag of gummy worms, put the money towards the camp. Keep track on a chart of how much you make each week. When you finally reach your goal, it will be a major accomplishment and the fruits of your labor (volleyball camp) will be all that more enjoyable.
Good luck making the bucks!
Jana
