My family is huge on golf. I’ve been golfing my whole life and become really good. But I’ve never been that into it. I don’t want to disappoint my dad, he always says he’s so proud of me and I could become a professional golfer. He signs me up for private lessons and buys me a ton of stuff.
It can be so tough to live in your family’s shadow, especially when they’re good at something you aren’t really into! One of my very awesome BFF’s has a family who is way into cooking. She just doesn’t have the cooking bug and is actually really bad in the kitchen. So, what did she do? She decided to use cooking as a way to get close to her fam, and at the same time, share her passions with them!
It is so awesome that your family is into sports – many girls would love to have something to do with their moms and dads. At the same time, if you’re feeling pressured, it’s time to speak up. Sit down with your dad and explain to him how much you love spending time with him and the family, how cool it is to see them doing so well, and even give him a few reasons golf has helped you since you started playing (it’s great stress relief, right?).
Then, follow it up by telling him that you appreciate the lessons and coaching, but don’t really feel like it’s your thing. Tell him about some stuff you are into and them make a pact. If you continue with some golf once in awhile, he supports you in your new passion of choice. I’m sure he’ll understand if you just keep using golf for a fun family activity and don’t give it up all together! Your fam loves you and loves hanging out with you!
