Once you get the permission to shave, our friends from Skintimate have compiled some excellent shaving tips and tricks for you!
Friends don’t let friends shave with soap and water!
Shaving with soap dries out your skin (alligator legs? No thanks!). Prep skin for shaving with Skintimate® Moisturizing Shave Gel instead. These shave preps offer a moisture-rich blend of vitamins, antioxidants, and a special skin softening complex to restore your silky, soft skin. They beat soap and water by offering unsurpassed protection from your razor blade.
Timing is everything.
To help avoid razor burn and irritation, make sure your legs and underarms have a chance to absorb moisture from your shower or bath for at least three minutes. Otherwise these hairs have the texture of copper wire. Wetting hairs helps plump the hair shaft and gives your razor more access to each individual hair. It produces a smoother, more comfortable shave and helps avoid painful razor burn and irritated skin.
Out with the old, in with the new.
Toss the old, dull blades; make sure you change your razor’s blade after 4-6 uses.
Take direction.
Avoid bumps and irritation by shaving with a fresh razor in the direction of your hair growth in areas prone to shaving irritation, such as the bikini area. When shaving your underarms, shave up and down and side to side, since hair grows in many different directions. Make sure to use a rich moisturizing shave gel like Skintimate® Moisturizing Shave Gel and reapply often if going over the same area. The emollient-rich shave gel will help reduce friction between the razor blade and your skin. The creamy lather allows you see clearly see each pass of the razor, making it easier to cut down on repeat strokes—a major cause of irritation.
TRUE OR FALSE? SHAVING MYSTERIES SOLVED!
Shaving your legs makes it grow back darker and faster
FALSE! This is simply a myth, and it’s important to shave regularly with a shave gel especially designed for a woman. Regular shaving helps to remove the dry, flaky top layer of skin—leaving your legs silky soft.
Underarm hair grows faster than leg hair.
TRUE! You may have to shave this area more frequently, as underarm hairs tend to grow back a lot faster than hair on any other part of your body. Underarm hairs can trap bacteria that lead to body odor, so regular shaving can help keep you smelling your best. Tip: To shave your underarms effectively, shave up and down, as well as from side to side. Reapply Skintimate® Moisturizing Shave Gel while shaving this sensitive area to avoid irritation and nicks and cuts.
Shaving leads to ingrowns.
TRUE! Hair in this area is often coarse and curly, and grows in random directions. It can easily become ingrown. Be sure to reapply Skintimate® Moisturizing Shave Gel often if you make repeated passes over the same area. If hair is long, trim it before you shave to help prevent your blade from becoming clogged. A clogged blade can “pull” out hairs instead of cutting them, which can lead to irritation.
Shaving is good for your skin.
TRUE! According to Dr. Zoe Diana Draelos, a North Carolina-based dermatologist and consultant for Skintimate, you can avoid aggravating sensitive skin by shaving regularly throughout the year. This will help prevent irritation by helping the skin to form a microscopic calloused layer. Maintaining your shaving routine year-round makes this area less vulnerable.
