EXCLUSIVE! Actress Diamond White dishes on voicing Marvel's first Black teen girl superhero

Allow us to introduce you to actress and singer Diamond White, voice of Disney Channel's newest and coolest superhero, Moon Girl. Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur (premiering this Friday, February 10) follows the epic adventures of Marvel's first Black teen superhero, making this animated show an absolute can't-miss. From music (stream her sophomore album Summerland here) to making her dreams a reality, we chatted with Diamond to get the inside scoop on the super series of the year.

Girls' Life: Tell us everything about Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.
Diamond White: Moon Girl is Marvel's first African American teenage girl superhero. The series follows Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur in their endeavors as they work together to protect the Lower East Side of Manhattan. I'm so thankful to be voicing this character. This was a role where I was literally like, "Mom, I really hope I get it." It's just been amazing so far. Moon Girl is a show for the whole family, and the music is really good too.

GL: What do you hope viewers take away from this series?
Diamond: That one girl can make a difference—with the help of her 300-ton dinosaur, of course. Together, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur really do make a difference in their community. Never in a million years did I think I'd be voicing a character like this, but I'm glad I am. Representation is super important to me, and I didn't grow up seeing characters with my skin tone or hair texture, so it's important that this character *finally* comes to life.

GL: That's so amazing. Aside from acting, you're also super into music. Tell us about your album, Summerland.
Diamond: I made that during COVID in my little walk-in closet. I wrote everything, produced it with my producer, Lucas, and we just spent all of COVID really perfecting the album. I'm completely independent of any labels, and it [Summerland] reached over a million streams all by itself. My favorite track is "The Kissing Song."

GL: Streaming, ASAP. And who are some artists that have influenced your sound?
Diamond: I'm super into Frank Ocean, Charli XCX and Beyoncé, but she's, like, a given. My last album was R&B and hyperpop at the same time, so I'm also inspired by 100 Gecs and artists like that. And if I could sign a duet with anyone, it would be Frank Ocean. That's for sure.

GL: Any advice for girls following their dreams?
Diamond: It's important to know that there are going to be a lot of no's. There are going to be doors that you feel like are never going to open, but if you just keep trying, even through your darkest phases, your life is going to be a lot different. I've been through a lot of ups and downs, but you just have to keep trying. Because as soon as there's a single yes, you'll forget about all the no's.

Watch the series premiere of Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur on Friday, February 10 at 8 PM EST, only on Disney Channel!
