A Texas high school has pulled a "Chivalry Day" assignment after facing backlash for telling girls to "dress to please the men," "never criticize" boys and "obey any reasonable request from a man."

We wish we were joking.

Girls were expected to participate in the assignment for the whole day, even at home, and have male classmates and family members sign off based on their behavior.

The boys' assignment included "assisting ladies to seat themselves" and dressing in suit jackets (they were not told to "dress to please the ladies").

The high school district, Shallowater, pulled the assignment after a series of complaints from parents and students about the archaic gender roles.

"This assignment has been reviewed, and despite its historical context, it does not reflect our district and community values. The matter has been discussed with the teacher, and the assignment has been removed," the school district said in a statement.

And just to make it explicitly clear: Girls don't have to cook and clean up after boys. They don't have to be quiet. And they certainly don't need to dress to please anyone but themselves.
