“I love yearning. I think it’s one of the top emotions,” Trinity Bliss says, grinning. “Enjoying the anticipation and tension of a crush can be the juiciest part of it all.”
If you ask us, the 16-year-old singer-songwriter and actress—who you’d likely recognize as little sis Tuk from the Avatar flicks—is exactly right. And her honesty about matters of the heart is probably why she’s now known for penning killer love songs, the latest of which is her new single: “will they won’t they.”
The track, which dropped last week, features a breezy, boppy sound that’s basically July incarnate and fittingly, it’s all about summer romance. More specifically, it plays off of one of Trinity’s favorite rom-com tropes (any guesses?).
“I wanted to groove of this song to be very contagious,” she says. “But lyrics are where I really geek out as a writer. It’s all about making yourself feel seen and making other people feel seen.”
And listening to her latest jam, we feel so dang seen. Anyone who’s ever crushed hard, prepare to relate on a v. deep level—and read on for Trinity’s take on everything from sunny season flings to her upcoming debut album.
Girls’ Life: Congrats on the new single! How did you come up with the concept for “will they won’t they”?
Trinity Bliss: Funny enough, I was actually at the beach in Malibu. I was feeling like everything was a bit limitless, like anything could be possible. The song is like a love letter to that place, that day and the anticipation between me and a certain person. The inspiration definitely came on the way home. I had a “thought daughter” moment in the passenger seat, staring out of the car window.
GL: I can picture it. Did anything ever happen with the crush that inspired the song?
Trinity: It never went anywhere, actually! [laughs] But, you know, maybe they’ll listen to this song and be like, Wait a minute!
GL: Some would say summer crushes hit harder. Is writing about them different than writing about any old crush?
Trinity: There’s something about summer that feels more adventurous and playful. I guess it’s a little more reckless, more about taking the chance and doing it for the plot. I really wanted to bring those emotions to life with the imagery in my lyrics, to place listeners there in that scene and feeling.
GL: Should fans expect to see a music video for “will they won’t they”?
Trinity: I’m hoping to keep taking people on this cinematic journey that started with the video for my song “you make me wanna dance.” They can definitely expect something on the way. And let me just say, gosh, filming on the beach is so hard! I hadn’t really anticipated that. 16-mile-per-hour gusts? I was like, What are we doing here?!
GL: I have to ask: What about an album?
Trinity: I’ve been waiting forever to share this album I’ve been working on. I feel like it’s such a time capsule of this coming-of-age moment for me. I really wanted to capture the whole rollercoaster of feelings. And all the songs will intertwine as one story, one arc.
GL: OMG, so exciting! Can you tease the name?
Trinity: It’s going to be called Forever Fool, because I really feel like I am a forever fool. But I also *want* to be a forever fool. It’s choosing to believe and be delusional even though you know better. Because, like, that’s the fun of it all.
GL: We can’t wait to hear it this fall.
Trinity: Thank you so much. That means a lot. And I probably shouldn’t pick favorite children, but some of the songs I’m most proud of are yet to come…
