We can’t lie: Waiting for the return of Olivia Rodrigo has been, well, brutal.
But thankfully, as of last Friday, the Disney-darling-turned-pop-rock-princess is back in our wired headphones. She released “drop dead”, the first single from her upcoming third record, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, out June 12. The punchy crush anthem was paired with a downright dreamy music video (that, NGL, we kinda can’t stop watching).
To celebrate the fresh OR release, we did a deep dive into all things “drop dead”, including the new vid. What can we say? We pay attention to things most people ignore…
1. It was actually filmed at Versailles. Yes, *that* Versailles.
The star and her team had exactly nine hours to take over the historic French Palace of Versailles and film the “drop dead” visuals. In a recent interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music, Olivia described the experience of running through the empty halls of the landmark as “Night at the Museum-y.”
And watching her flop down on a bed under glowing gold chandeliers and twirling past rows of marble statues, we can def understand this whole “taking the Eurostar to France” thing.
2. It’s got a connection to The Summer I Turned Pretty.
Olivia isn’t the only lovestruck traveler who got to explore the grounds of Versailles. The Summer I Turned Pretty season finale, which aired last September, saw Belly and Conrad share a romantic stroll through the museum gallery (specifically the Hall of Mirrors) and surrounding gardens. 3. The video features a v. famous fit.
That pearl-dotted frock that Liv dons at the karaoke bar? Turns out it wasn’t just ripped from her closet—although given its utterly adorable vintage vibes, we’d believe it.
The mini dress was originally worn by Brit-born actress Jane Birkin (Ever heard of a Birkin bag? She’s the inspo!) in the 70s. And it was only one of the many fabulously flirty ensembles in the “drop dead” vid. We’re just trend-forecasting here, but looks like it’s time to invest in more frills.
4. Olivia had already written the song—or at least one iconic lyric—back in June 2025.
Fans were quick to point out that Olivia had to have been penning you seem pretty sad circa summer 2025. Their evidence? She wore a baby tee that read “You know all the words to Just Like Heaven”—a line we now know from the first verse of “drop dead”—when she took the stage with The Cure at last year’s Glastonbury Festival in England.
Not to steal Olivia’s brand, but this discovery does make us want to stalk her, or at least her past fashion choices, on the Internet.
5. It’s not all rainbows and butterflies.
Sure, the star-crossed sweeties Olivia sings about on “drop dead” (shoutout to our Pisces and Gemini couples!) instantly made our heart melt.
But before we enter full lover girl mode, it’s worth noting that the singer/songwriter describes the track as “the first chapter in the story.” With swirling (but, friendly reminder, unconfirmed!) breakup rumors and an album title that suggests ‘ships aren’t always as swoony as they seem, we imagine there are some sadder songs to come…
